Do you know what an identity is? Is it a person’s birth certificate, their school records, their membership card for a soccer team? And when will all of this become digital? Here we are talking about your internet search history, your social networks, passwords to access banking apps and many other credentials.

The concepts and keywords surrounding a digital identity – DI are quite complex and difficult to define. Despite this, with digitalization and the development of a digital public infrastructure in Brazil, these topics are on the agenda of everyone’s day.

Identity validation allows people to access products and services intended for them. This is the case of a person receiving social benefits for meeting requirements determined by a public policy and accessing their own bank account by knowing their password.

The definition of parameters in an identity is important for any person, company, or organization. At the same time, the validation process can be flawed, generate exclusion and harm the entire ecosystem that depends on this verification. This is because, when inserted into a context of digital public infrastructure, the identification system becomes recognized and applied on a large scale by that community, and can also be used by new actors.

Therefore, it is essential that the community understands and applies the concepts surrounding a digital DI. This will enable the debate to be broadened to the joint construction of a digital identity solution.

Public debate is significant when the objective is to establish the foundations and create systems that are universal in a community, as is the case with digital public infrastructure applications.

But do you know what the applications of a digital public infrastructure are? What are the functions of an DI as an application of this infrastructure? Why is interoperability important in the construction of identity solutions? What is the horizon of a digital identity system?

It is through these questions that it will be possible to advance the debate on digital identity as one of the applications of Digital Public Infrastructure. For Data Privacy Brasil, one of the pillars of the construction of a Brazilian digital DI is precisely the participation of all the affected agents, since only then will we be able to guarantee that this DI is in accordance with fundamental rights.

With this in mind, Data Privacy Brasil has developed a series of content to provide the necessary foundations and tools for all those interested in the subject. With this, we will be able to discuss, as a community, what we want from a digital identity and how we can achieve it.
