We intend to investigate how social control takes place with the sharing and centralization of databases and the use of surveillance technologies and why the protection of personal data should be explicitly placed on a social justice agenda. This line encompasses research, analysis, and actions within this [emerging] field, seeking to understand the role of digital platforms, regulators, and civil society, nationally and internationally, so that the creation of standards and the guarantee of rights follow rapid technological and social changes.

Asymmetries and Power

With an eye on datafication processes and their impacts on society, in this line of research, we seek to understand power and information asymmetries that are created or intensified by the advancement of technologies and the massive use of personal data by governments and companies. This work starts from an understanding of how technologies relate to social processes of marginalization, discrimination, and violence from the lens of social identities such as gender, class and race.

In this context, there is a growing intersection with data protection and its relationship with other spheres, such as electoral, competition, and (hyper)vulnerable groups spheres, such as the rights of children and adolescents.
